Lattice QCD Computational Science Workshop
Overview
The purpose of this workshop is to advance our understanding of the scientific goals in the Lattice QCD community and how leadership-class computing is currently integrated in this scientific research and will need to change to meet their future computing and data requirements.
Lattice QCD calculations aim to understand the physical phenomena encompassed by quantum chromodynamics (QCD), the fundamental theory of the strong forces of subatomic physics, and to make precise calculations of the theory’s predictions. These simulations are necessary to solve fundamental problems in nuclear physics and high-energy physics that are at the heart of DOE’s large experimental efforts in these fields.
The OLCF provides leadership-class computing capabilities to a select user community and awarded 1.84 billion core-hours for 2013 through the INCITE allocation program. Since the beginning of the INCITE program, the Lattice QCD community has been one of, and often, the largest core-hour users of these computing resources.
This workshop will bring together Lattice QCD experts and OLCF large-scale computing experts to discuss how computational science on leadership-class computing architectures is advancing research and development in lattice QCD, and as a result, impacting DOE’s missions in high energy and nuclear physics. Attendees will also discuss future computing and data needs foreseen in lattice QCD research, and their scientific motivations.
