Several Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF) researchers, users, and staff members are being honored for their contributions to science and the US Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) at this year’s UT-Battelle Awards Night. The OLCF is an Office of Science User Facility at ORNL.
The Technical Support Award for Research went to the team led by Matthew Ezell, “for ensuring uninterrupted operation of Summit during the COVID-19 pandemic including rapid onboarding of 19 large-scale COVID-19 projects across multiple national institutions and federal agencies.”
Other members of the team include Matt Belhorn, Christopher Fuson, Jason Kincl, Stefan Maerz, Ketan Maheshwari, Jeffrey Miller, Suzanne Parete-Koon, William Renaud, Jason Renner, Scott Simmerman, Jake Wynne, and Verónica Melesse Vergara.

Melesse Vergara was also recognized in the category of Community Outreach for her participation in YoSTEM, an organization that promotes interest in STEM careers for children in underserved communities.
The Continuous Improvement Award was also conferred to OLCF team members. The OLCF ECP-CI team was recognized for having “significantly improved the way scientific software is developed and deployed on world-class HPC resources.”
The team—composed of Ryan Adamson, Ashley Barker, Matt Belhorn, Adam Carlyle, Noah Ginsburg, Christopher Muzyn, Larry Orcutt, and Ryan Prout—worked on platform integrations that allow for increased productivity of software development, an effort that positively impacts time-to-solution of scientific software.
“This capability will outlast the ECP project and will become the industry-standard for efficiently and reliably testing scientific software,” the decision read.
The Research Leadership Award was granted to OLCF user Paul Kent, a researcher in the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences, “for exemplary leadership in the development and application of quantum Monte Carlo methods on high-performance computing platforms.”
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s awards ceremony will be livestreamed via Teams on November 20.
