IEEE Computing in Science & Engineering Special Issue on Leadership Computing Announced

Facility directors at Argonne and Oak Ridge national laboratories named guest editors

Michael Papka, director of the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility, and James Hack, director of the National Center for Computational Sciences, which houses the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility, have been appointed the guest editors of a special issue of IEEE Computing in Science & Engineering (CiSE) magazine on leadership computing.

CiSE, co-published by the IEEE Computer Society and the American Institute of Physics, is a high-quality, peer-reviewed, topical magazine aimed at featuring the latest computational science and engineering research. It will begin accepting submissions for the special issue in the fall of 2013.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Leadership Computing Facilities, located at Oak Ridge and Argonne National Laboratories, house some of the world’s most advanced supercomputers to accelerate scientific discovery and engineering innovation. Leadership computing focuses on large-scale, computationally intensive projects that exploit the capabilities of these systems.

The goal of this special issue of CiSE is to explore how leadership computing is being effectively used to support real-world science and engineering applications. Topics will include algorithmic and application formulations, programming models and systems, runtime systems and middleware, end-to-end application workflows, and experiences with real applications.

“Simulation of complex systems fills an essential role in scientific discovery, and leadership computing capabilities have enabled remarkable scientific and technical advances,” Hack said. “We hope to illustrate the foundational computational science research that has contributed to these many success stories.”
