Jaguar metamorphosis to Titan enters last phase as NVIDIA GPUs are installed
It’s almost here.
The final phase of the XK6 upgrade that will result in Titan occurred on September 13 at 8 a.m. Approximately 60,000 cores were removed from Jaguar to make room for the addition of Titan’s NVIDIA Tesla graphics processing units (GPUs). Following the upgrade, Titan’s hybrid CPU/GPU architecture will make it capable of more than 20 petaflops of peak computing power, making it among the world’s most powerful computers.
Ultimately, the transition from Jaguar to Titan will allow scientists across a wide range of disciplines to enhance their simulations and more rapidly and efficiently solve some of science’s greatest questions, from climate change to novel materials to more efficient nuclear reactors.
