The Advanced Technologies Section (ATS) of the National Center for Computational Sciences at ORNL is a world leader in developing and deploying scientific and technical solutions for leadership-class computing environments. The R&D activities of ATS are organized around designing and deploying leadership class systems, developing artificial intelligence solutions for science and smart facilities of the future, and stewardship of data and workflows at scale to enable science. An Overview of ORNL’s AI Initiative

David Womble is current the Director of Artificial Intelligence Programs at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.  His responsibilities include guiding ORNL’s AI and machine learning strategy for high-performance computing (HPC); ensuring broad scientific impacts to the Department of Energy Office of Science mission; and long-range program planning and project leadership.

Prior to joining Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Dr. Womble was a senior manager at Sandia National Laboratories, having served as the Program Deputy for Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC), and as senior manager for the Engineering Science Computational Simulation Group and the Computer Science and Mathematics Group. During his career at Sandia, he worked in high performance computing with technical contributions in numerical mathematics, linear solvers, scalable algorithms and I/O.  He established the Computer Science Research Institute currently located in Sandia Science and Technology Park and led Sandia’s seismic imaging project in DOE’s Advanced Computational Technologies Initiative.  David has also worked closely with EERE’s Atmosphere to Electrons Program for the past three years.  His recognitions include two R&D100 awards and the Gordon Bell Award in high performance computing.

Dr. Womble earned his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics and M.S. in Electrical Engineering at Georgia Tech in 1986.  He also earned a B.S. in Mathematics and Computer Science from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in 1982.
