April 2025 OLCF User Conference Call: Quantum Hardware in HPC Centers: Integration and Performance Benchmarking
The OLCF hosts monthly User Conference Calls. These calls are your opportunity to speak with center personnel to get the latest updates, express any concerns you may have, etc. No registration is required for this event. An email with an invite to the event will be sent to OLCF users approximately one week beforehand.
Monthly Topic: Quantum Hardware in HPC Centers: Integration and Performance Benchmarking
Speaker: Peter Groszkowski (OLCF)
Abstract:
Quantum computers will likely play an important role in the future of computing, as they promise to solve problems that are traditionally hard to explore on classical (even high-performance) hardware. It is also becoming clear that both noisy, as well as future, fully error-corrected machines will have to work closely in tandem with classical computers (in various contexts: algorithms and applications, control, data processing, etc.). In this talk, after giving a brief introduction to quantum computing, I will outline ORNL’s recent integration efforts related to interfacing quantum hardware (both real as well as simulated) into the Oak Ridge Leadership Facility (OLCF), home of the high-performance-computing (HPC) systems such as Frontier. Crucially, I will also discuss ORNL’s joint work with Riverlane and Rigetti in building and testing an open-sourced benchmarking and profiling suite called QStone for exploring and analyzing *joint* classical and quantum performance of hybrid HPC/QC workflows.
