NERSC Remote Participation Only 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM (PT)

AMD will present “Intro to GPUs and HIP” on Monday, August 14, 2023. This event is part of the HIP Training Series and will be presented by Bob Robey of AMD.

HIP was developed by AMD to provide a portable programming low-level language for GPUs. It is designed as a light layer on top of the ROCm language for AMD GPUs and CUDA for Nvidia GPUs. This session will introduce you to the basics of programming GPUs, and the syntax and API of HIP to transfer data to and from GPUs, write GPU kernels, and manage GPU thread groups. We’ll stress how to use HIP to write portable GPU code, including examples of portable makefile and cmake build systems. Following the presentation, there will be a hands-on session where participants can complete example exercises meant to reinforce the presented concepts.

Participation in the hands-on portion of each session will be limited to participants who already have access to OLCF’s Frontier or NERSC’s Perlmutter.

The Q&A for all the sessions will be in this Google doc
