ATS Seminar Series: Jian Huang
The Advanced Technologies Section (ATS) of the National Center for Computational Sciences at ORNL is a world leader in developing and deploying scientific and technical solutions for leadership-class computing environments. The R&D activities of ATS are organized around designing and deploying leadership class systems, developing artificial intelligence solutions for science and smart facilities of the future, and stewardship of data and workflows at scale to enable science. The ATS Seminar Series is a forum for learning from experts and engaging with collaborators to advance their scientific mission.
Seminar Title:
Visualization as a Service
Scientific visualization is an important insights tool. In this talk, we will discuss a new approach that enables delivering highly interactive visualizations to scientific users from the cloud, hence the term of Visualization as a Service (VaaS). This new approach leverages elastic parallelism as well as the on-demand nature of the cloud and has a potential of disrupting how scientists use and perceive the value of scientific visualization, both in individual work and in distributed collaborative work settings. Our latest research on VaaS has shown benefits such as reproducibility, accessibility, and portability. From an infrastructural research perspective, VaaS could also enable new ways to design both scientific archives and data services that integrate with highly interactive analysis services.

Jian Huang
Dr. Jian Huang is a professor of computer science in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science department at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK). He started his academic career at UTK after graduating with his Ph.D. in computer science from the Ohio State University in 2001. His research is in data visualization, analytics, and high-performance computing. His work on VaaS has expanded use scenarios of data-intensive visualizations for widespread accessibility, shareability, reproducibility and replicability. His group’s open-source tools have enabled VaaS services to be used in software systems flexibly, including in Jupyter Notebooks. His work has been funded by National Science Foundation, Department of Energy, Department of Interior, and Intel.
