PennyLane on Frontier 2025

Quantum computing with PennyLane Lightning on Frontier

PennyLane is a cross-platform Python library for quantum computing, quantum machine learning, and quantum chemistry. This training event introduces participants to key concepts and tools, enabling them to explore quantum algorithms and integrate them in an HPC setting. We will explore key PennyLane functionalities using both GPUs and CPUs on the Odo training cluster (a smaller cluster with the same architecture as the Frontier system). Whether you’re a beginner or familiar with quantum programming, this tutorial offers valuable insights and practical knowledge into the world of quantum computing. In this session we’ll answer common questions such as when to use different PennyLane simulators, when to use CPUs vs GPUs, and where we’re heading in terms of quantum computing research. Get a head start for this training session by exploring the PennyLane Codebook and pennylane.ai.

This training is presented by Xanadu. Xanadu is a Canadian quantum computing company with the mission to build quantum computers that are useful and available to people everywhere. Founded in 2016, Xanadu has become one of the world’s leading quantum hardware and software companies. The company also leads the development of PennyLane. Agenda:
1:00 – 1:20: Introduction to Xanadu and PennyLane
1:20 – 1:50: Quantum circuits “Hello World” (hands-on)
1:50 – 2:30: Quantum programming at scale with Lightning (hands-on)
2:30 – 2:40: Conclusion
2:40 – 3:00: Q&A

Presenters: Catalina Albornoz Anzola & Joseph Lee, Xanadu

Reminder: To participate in the hands-on portion of this training, OLCF users must apply for Odo access under Project ID TRN043.

Instructions for applying for Odo access will be emailed to you after you complete your registration.
Please submit your access request promptly to ensure your account is active before the training.

To guarantee Odo compute access, you must register prior to Friday, September 26 by 5 p.m. ET.
Registrations after that time may still be able to get complete access, but are not guaranteed.
