The goal of this proposal is to increase the scale of finite element analysis (FEA), both in terms of the models and the computing systems employed. Key to success of this effort will be increasing the parallel scalability of the implicit solution in the LS-DYNA code. This effort supports the Department of Energy mission to ensure America’s security and prosperity by addressing the modeling and simulations requirements needed by energy intensive industries, such as aerospace and automotive. Modeling and simulation has become increasingly important in both product design and support. The complexity and model size has increased accordingly. Larger and more complicated models have led to longer run times for simulation software. The increase in run time is not linear, but rather exponential. Research and development of modeling and simulation software is needed to improve the parallel scalability so that larger, more sophisticated models can be used, and their faster time to solution impacts the design cycle.
