Project Description
Fire simulation tools like FDS are helping to design fire suppression systems, investigate and understand the cause of fire accidents and to improve design and safety codes to prevent future accidents. Fire tests and experiments are extremely expensive and time-consuming and hence simulation tools are valuable to help elucidate the physics of fire growth and suppression for fire protection engineers. Fire phenomena is a true multi-scale (from flame thickness to room dimensions), multi-physics (aerodynamics, combustion, radiation, different materials), multi-phase (gas phase combustion, solid phase combustion, liwuid phase suppression agents, foam and powder fire suppresants, etc) and truly requires massive computational costs to perform such simulations. Understanding from such simulations will be truly valuable to design efficient and environmentally friendly fire suppression systems.
