Project Description

Orbital ATK is a global leader in aerospace and defense technologies. Its main products include launch vehicles and related propulsion systems; missile products, subsystems and defense electronics; precision weapons, armament systems and ammunition; satellites and associated space components and services; and advanced aerospace structures. Hero is also utilized by other organizations including NASA & DoD.The simulation capabilities incorporated into HERO is critical for understanding physical phenomena in rockets and reentry vehicles. This understanding helps efficient design of our propulsion products and to reduce costly physical testing.The proposed scaling study is important for Orbital ATK to understand the efficiency of algorithms built into HERO for large, high fidelity models. Reducing computer solution times is also key to reducing design/analysis cycles and create better, robust designs. This study will help to assess and improve HERO performance on upto 10,000 cores and evaluate performance gains in employing GPU acceleration. This far exceeds our current in-house HPC capacity and will provides demonstrable justification for additional HPC capacity in-house.
