As silicon technologies face fundamental limits, breakthroughs in new electronics are likely rely on novel materials and new device architectures, which have unique physical properties obtained by subtle modifications of quantum confinement effect at nano-scale level. All these physical quantities are extremely sensitive to the local environment, defects, carrier doping, and many types of physical and chemical interactions. GLOBAL FOUNDRIES, a leading provider of advanced semiconductor manufacturing technology, is the first wafer foundry to develop 14 and 10 nm process technologies and its successful execution of joint development will enable faster time to market of high density functional devices on-chip for innovative applications.
Computational modelling together with experimental calibration is essential to enable rapid engineering design and to accelerate materials development in future. Computing based techniques will be critical to reducing cost and time associated with nano materials and device technology development.
