Frontier Hackathon August 2024

Frontier Hackathon (Virtual and HYBRID days)
Late August virtual days and September 9 hybrid day
11:00 AM – 5:00 PM (EDT)
Contact: Suzanne Parete-Koon (paretekoonst@ornl.gov).

Overview

The OLCF, in collaboration with HPE and AMD and others, is pleased to announce a 4-Day Frontier Hackathon. Three of the days will be virtual and in August and the fourth day will be in-person the day before the OLCF User Meeting, on September 9. There will also be an out-briefing from teams on hackathon accomplishments during the OLCF User Meeting. Based on past team feedback, the August virtual days will be spread over a couple of weeks, so teams have more time to make progress on the work they start during the mentored hacking days.

Application Submissions Due July 19 at 5:00 pm EDT.

Application to this hackathon is competitive and requires a brief application. The application form asks you to describe your HPC application code(s) and set goals for your team for the hackathon. You will be selected based on how clear and reasonable your goals are for a 5-day hackathon and how clearly you describe your code.

Please do not propose goals that require working at scale on Frontier, as the hackathon reservation will be limited to ~40 nodes so that it does not impact other applications’ ongoing production campaigns.

Here are some examples of past team goals and accomplishments:

  • Accelerated their codes’ CPU kernels on the GPUs
  • Converted significant sections of their application from CUDA to HIP or OpenACC to OpenMP Target Offload
  • Profiled and significantly boosted their code’s performance on Frontier
  • Improved I/O performance
  • Found and fixed bugs
  • Helped onboard new project members
  • Generated their first roofline plot
  • Received ideas for further improving performance

Preference may be given to teams that commit to send a member to OLCF for the in-person day on September 9 and the out-briefing during the OLCF user meeting September 10-11, however in-person attendance is not required.

All team members attending September 9,  virtually or in-person, will need to have a PAS (pass for entry to ORNL or virtual entry). Information will be sent to you for the PAS when you are selected.
