Nick Schmitt is a DevOps Application Administrator for the Platforms group in the National Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The Platforms group supports the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility’s (OLCF) Kubernetes service called Slate, which provides a Platform-as-a-Service supporting both user and staff projects to deploy and operate stateful services such as scientific workflows, databases, and data portals in NCCS. Prior to working at ORNL Nick was employed by a start-up company as an R&D Software Developer where he created developer tooling, a payment processing platform for cryptocurrency applications, as well as worked on low-level audio and video programming to support a live streaming video application for iOS. Nick also served an enlistment as a Corporal (E-4) in the United States Marine Corps for the Headquarters and Service Battalion of Marine Corps Forces, Pacific (MARFORPAC). In that role he operated as a Systems Administrator, maintaining base services such as Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft Sharepoint across classified and unclassified Marine Corps Enterprise (MCEN) networks.
