Announcements
New Data Analysis Cluster: Andes
As announced during the recent OLCF User Meeting, we will soon replace our data analysis cluster Rhea with a new system named Andes. Andes will contain 704 compute nodes, each with two 16-core AMD EPYC processors and 256 GB of memory. Additionally, the GPU/High-Memory nodes currently in Rhea’s ‘rhea-gpu’ partition will be moved over to Andes.
The availability timeline will be announced in future user messages. In the meantime, we suggest users begin reviewing the Andes User Guide located at https://docs.olcf.ornl.gov/systems/andes_user_guide.html. If you have any questions, please contact the User Assistance Center at help@olcf.ornl.gov.
New Walltime Limit for batch-hm Queue
The walltime limit for the recently-announced high memory nodes on Summit (accessed via the batch-hm queue) has been increased from 6 hours to 24 hours.
Meetings & Workshops
July OLCF User Conference Call (Today)
The July OLCF User Conference Call will be held at noon (Eastern Time) today. The call will include an overview of Kokkos led by ORNL’s Damien Lebrun-Grandie. Details of the call, including information on how to join, can be found at https://www.olcf.ornl.gov/calendar/userconcall-jul2020/.
Weekly Kokkos Lecture Series (Through Sep 4)
The weekly Kokkos Lecture Series began on July 17 and continues through September 4. The objective of this training os for attendees to learn everything necessary to start using Kokkos to write performance portable code. This 8-part Kokkos Lecture Series consists of 2-hour online lectures every Friday and exercises as homework. The team provides support via GitHub and Slack throughout the time of the training. Events are recorded, so if you have to miss one, you can still watch the video and complete the exercises in time to participate in the next lecture. For more information or to register, please visit https://www.exascaleproject.org/event/kokkos-class-series/.
2020 OLCF GPU Hackathon (virtual)
The OLCF’s annual GPU hackathon is multi-day coding event in which teams of developers prepare their own application(s) to run on GPUs or focus on optimizing their application(s) that currently run on GPUs. Teams typically consist of three or more developers who are intimately familiar with (some part of) their application, and they work alongside two mentors with GPU programming expertise. These hackathons offer a unique opportunity for teams to set aside time for development, surround themselves with experts in the field, and push toward their development goals. During the event, teams will have access to the OLCF’s Ascent training system (same node architecture as Summit). If you’re interested in more information, have questions about the virtual format, or just want to apply, you can visit the event page below. If you have additional questions, please contact Tom Papatheodore.
– Event Dates: October 19, 26-28 (9 AM – 5 PM (ET))
– Deadline to apply: August 6, 2020 @ 11:59 PM (ET)
– Event page: https://www.olcf.ornl.gov/2020-olcf-gpu-hackathon/
CUDA Training Series
NVIDIA will present a 9-part CUDA training series intended to help new and existing GPU programmers understand the main concepts of the CUDA platform and its programming model. Each part will include a 1-hour presentation and example exercises. The exercises are meant to reinforce the material from the presentation and can be completed during a 1-hour hands-on session following each lecture. The full list of topics can be found on the series page. If you have any questions about this series, please contact Tom Papatheodore.
