CENTER ANNOUNCEMENTS
CHANGES TO RHEA VNC AND NICE DCV GPU USAGE (Apr 29)
On April 29, changes will be made on Rhea to allow the use of both VNC and Nice DCV on Rhea’s GPU compute nodes. Following the outage, VNC will become the default configuration on the GPU compute nodes to match the non-GPU compute nodes and will require no batch job changes. To use Nice DCV on the GPU compute nodes after April 29, you will need to add ‘feature=dcv’ to your batch script. For example:
qsub -I -A abc123 -X -l nodes=1,walltime=1:00:00,partition=gpu,feature=dcv
2020 INCITE CALL FOR PROPOSALS (CLOSES JUN 21)
The 2020 Innovative and Novel Computational Impact on Theory and Experiment (INCITE) Call for Proposals is now open and closes June 21. The INCITE program promotes transformational advances in science and technology for computationally and/or data-intensive, large-scale research projects through large allocations of computer time and supporting resources at the Argonne and Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (LCF) centers. INCITE seeks research enterprises for capability computing: production simulations, data science, and/or learning applications—including ensembles—that use a large fraction of the LCF systems or require the unique LCF architectural infrastructure for high-impact projects that cannot be performed on less capable resources. For more information, visit http://www.doeleadershipcomputing.org/.
2020 INCITE PROPOSAL WRITING WEBINARS (MAY 9, JUN 4)
To help you prepare your proposal for submission, the INCITE program is offering instructional webinars on May 9 and June 4. For more information or to register, visit https://www.alcf.anl.gov/workshops/2020-incite-proposal-writing-webinar.
NOMINATIONS FOR OLCF USER GROUP EXECUTIVE BOARD
Nominate yourself to run for the OLCF User Group Executive Board. If elected, you will serve on a 10-person board that provides advice and feedback to the OLCF on the current and future state of OLCF operations and services. The term of service for the successful candidates is three years. Elections will be held electronically during the user meeting. Nomination will take place through May 3rd. To run, fill out the form at https://www.olcf.ornl.gov/2019-ougeb-nomination.
NOTABLE SYSTEM CHANGES IN 2019
On February 25, 2019, we notified users of several notable system changes coming in 2019. The last day to submit jobs to Titan and Eos will be June 30th. Atlas will be made read-only on August 1 and all data will be permanently deleted on August 15. We strongly encourage users to begin moving data out of that filesystem and onto the newer Alpine filesystem or to some alternate locate as soon as possible. If you have questions about data movement, please contact help@olcf.ornl.gov. For more information, please see the 2019 OLCF System Decommissions and Notable Changes page on the OLCF website.
2019 OLCF USER MEETING
The Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF) is pleased to announce the 2019 OLCF User Meeting will be held May 21-23 at Oak Ridge National Lab in Oak Ridge, TN. The purpose of the annual user meeting is to share selected computational science and engineering achievements emerging from OLCF’s user programs, to enable direct interactions among users, advance OLCF’s relationships with our user community, and highlight computational requirements for the future. Highlights of the meeting include paired talks from OLCF users and application developers, plenary talks, updates from center staff, a poster session, OLCF User Group Executive Board elections, and tours of OLCF. Additionally, OLCF will offer training on the Monday prior to the meeting for those interested. For more information or to register, please visit the event page.
MEETINGS & WORKSHOPS
APRIL OLCF USER CONFERENCE CALL (MAY 1)
NOTE: This call has been rescheduled to May 1
The April OLCF User Conference Call will be held at noon (Eastern Time) on Wednesday, May 1. The call will include a discussion of alternatives to FreeNX for remote X11 display, such as VNC and NICE DCV. The discussion will be led by OLCF’s Benjamin Hernandez. Details of the call, including information on how to join, can be found on the concall event page.
We will not hold a conference call at the end of May due to the OLCF User Meeting. The next call is currently scheduled for June 19. Watch for more information about that call in future Weekly Update messages.
QUANTUM COMPUTING USER FORUM (APR 25)
ORNL is hosting a Quantum Computing User Forum on April 25. This meeting will bring together users to discuss common practices in the development of applications and software for quantum computing systems. The one-day meeting will include invited and contributed presentations from leading researchers in the field of quantum computer science, and it will provide a forum in which to discuss the latest scientific applications of quantum computers. An optional training event will be held one day prior to the Forum. For more information, visit the event page.
INTRODUCTION TO SUMMIT WORKSHOP (MAY 20)
The OLCF will host an Introduction to Summit workshop on Monday, May 20, 2019 from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM. The event will consist of presentations in the morning followed by a hands-on session in the afternoon. The presentations are meant to deliver relevant information about the system (hardware, job launcher, programming environment, etc.), while the hands-on session is intended to demonstrate specific aspects of the Summit system through a set of provided example programs. For more information, or to register, please visit the event page.
2019 PETASCALE COMPUTING INSTITUTE (AUG 19-23)
The Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF) will host a branch of the 2019 Petascale Computing Institute from August 19-23, 2019. The goal of the institute is to enable computational and data-enabled discovery in all fields of study by teaching the participants to scale their computational codes to leadership-class computing systems. The institute will be broadcast to host sites using full-duplex audio/video connections. Participants will receive training accounts, on-site mentoring, and the ability to ask questions of the presenters orally and via on-line chats. Presentations will be given by staff members of the organizing institutions (ALCF, NCSA, NERSC, OLCF, PSC, SciNet – University of Toronto, and TACC), and the keynote address will be given by Gordon Bell. For more information, or to register, please visit the event page.
OLCF GPU HACKATHON SERIES (OPEN CALLS)
OLCF is once again supporting several GPU hackathons. GPU hackathons are 5-day coding events in which teams of developers prepare their own applications(s) to run on GPUs or focus on optimizing their application(s) that currently run on GPUs. Teams should consist of three or more developers who are intimately familiar with (some part of) their application, and they will work alongside two mentors with GPU programming expertise. If you want/need to get your code running (or optimized) on a GPU-accelerated system, these hackathons offer a unique opportunity to set aside 5 days, surround yourself with experts in the field, and push toward your goals. If you are interested in more information, or would like to submit a proposal to one of the upcoming events, please visit the OLCF GPU Hackathons event page.
Upcoming GPU Hackathons and application deadlines:
Princeton: June 24-28 (deadline to apply: April 26)
NERSC: July 15-19 (deadline to apply: May 15)
UPCOMING SCHEDULED OUTAGES
Rhea and Summitdev will be unavailable from 5:00 PM on Friday, April 26 until 8:00 AM on Monday, April 29.
HPSS will be unavailable via the hsi and htar commands from 8:00 AM until noon on April 30. HPSS access via Globus will remain available during this time.
