USER ASSISTANCE CENTER SCHEDULE (MAY 27)
The User Assistance Center will be closed on Monday, May 27 due to an ORNL-observed holiday. The normal user assistance schedule will resume on Tuesday, May 28. NOTE: The ORNL Computer Operations staff will still be available for limited troubleshooting 24 hours a day.
SUMMIT SOFTWARE UPGRADES (MAY 21)
During yesterday’s outage, Summit’s software stack was upgraded to include CUDA 10.1 and newer compilers. System defaults were changed, so it’s highly recommended that all users recompile codes prior to running on the upgraded system. We also encourage you to review the CUDA 10.1 material found at https://www.olcf.ornl.gov/for-users/system-user-guides/summit/summit-user-guide/#cuda-10.1-known-issues as well as the slides/video from the March OLCF User Conference Call (https://www.olcf.ornl.gov/calendar/userconcall-mar2019/).

FRONTIER CAAR CALL FOR PROPOSALS (CLOSES JUN 7)
The OLCF is now accepting proposals for Center for Accelerated Application Readiness partnerships to prepare modeling and simulation, data-intensive, and machine learning applications for highly effective use of the OLCF Frontier system that will become available to OLCF users in 2022. Applications must be received by 11:59 PM (Eastern Time) on Friday, June 7. For more information about the Frontier CAAR program or to apply, please visit the Frontier CAAR Program Page.
2020 INCITE CALL FOR PROPOSALS (CLOSES JUN 21)
The 2020 Innovative and Novel Computational Impact on Theory and Experiment (INCITE) Call for Proposals is now open and closes June 21. The INCITE program promotes transformational advances in science and technology for computationally and/or data-intensive, large-scale research projects through large allocations of computer time and supporting resources at the Argonne and Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (LCF) centers. INCITE seeks research enterprises for capability computing: production simulations, data science, and/or learning applications—including ensembles—that use a large fraction of the LCF systems or require the unique LCF architectural infrastructure for high-impact projects that cannot be performed on less capable resources. NOTABLE SYSTEM CHANGES IN 2019
On February 25, 2019, we notified users of several notable system changes coming in 2019. The last day to submit jobs to Titan and Eos will be June 30th. Atlas will be made read-only on August 1 and all data will be permanently deleted on August 15. We strongly encourage users to begin moving data out of that filesystem and onto the newer Alpine filesystem or to some alternate locate as soon as possible. MEETINGS & WORKSHOPS
INTRODUCTION TO AMD GPU PROGRAMMING WITH HIP WEBINAR (JUN 7)
AMD Research will be presenting a webinar titled, “Introduction to AMD GPU programming with HIP” on June 7th from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM ET. HIP is a C++ runtime API that allows developers to write portable code to run on AMD and NVIDIA GPUs. It is an interface that uses the underlying Radeon Open Compute (ROCm) or CUDA platform that is installed on a system. The API is similar to CUDA so porting existing codes from CUDA to HIP should be fairly straightforward in most cases. For more information, or to register, please visit the event page.
LINUX COMMAND LINE PRODUCTIVITY TOOLS TUTORIAL (JUNE 11)
The Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF) will host a Linux Command Line Productivity Tools tutorial on June 11, 2019. This event is intended to teach new and existing Linux users how to improve their productivity with some of the most useful tools and commands from the Linux command line. Participants can follow along with the demonstrations either directly on their (Linux/Mac) laptops or by logging into a remote Linux system they currently have access to. OLCF/ECP OPENMP HACKATHON (JUL 22-26)
The OLCF, in conjunction with ECP, is organizing an OpenMP Hackathon on July 22-26, 2019 in Knoxville, TN. We encourage participation of teams specially interested in porting and optimizing their applications on GPUs by using the latest OpenMP features. The deadline to submit a proposal is June 21, 2019. 2019 PETASCALE COMPUTING INSTITUTE (AUG 19-23)
The Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF) will host a branch of the 2019 Petascale Computing Institute from August 19-23, 2019. The goal of the institute is to enable computational and data-enabled discovery in all fields of study by teaching the participants to scale their computational codes to leadership-class computing systems. The institute will be broadcast to host sites using full-duplex audio/video connections. Participants will receive training accounts, on-site mentoring, and the ability to ask questions of the presenters orally and via on-line chats. Presentations will be given by staff members of the organizing institutions (ALCF, NCSA, NERSC, OLCF, PSC, SciNet – University of Toronto, and TACC), and the keynote address will be given by Gordon Bell. OLCF GPU HACKATHON SERIES (OPEN CALLS)
OLCF is once again supporting several GPU hackathons. GPU hackathons are 5-day coding events in which teams of developers prepare their own applications(s) to run on GPUs or focus on optimizing their application(s) that currently run on GPUs. Teams should consist of three or more developers who are intimately familiar with (some part of) their application, and they will work alongside two mentors with GPU programming expertise. If you want/need to get your code running (or optimized) on a GPU-accelerated system, these hackathons offer a unique opportunity to set aside 5 days, surround yourself with experts in the field, and push toward your goals. WANT TO BE A GPU HACKATHON MENTOR?
As a mentor, you will work with a team of developers that intends to use a programming model (CUDA, OpenACC, OpenMP4.5+, Kokkos, etc.) you are familiar with. Typically, the mentors are paired (2 per team) so that one mentor has a strong GPU-programming background while the other has enough knowledge to help their team but is also there to learn. Regardless of your level of expertise, these events are great opportunities to sharpen your skills, learn about the latest technologies, and collaborate with others in your community.
