Center Announcements

User Assistance Center Schedule
The OLCF User Assistance Center will be closed on Monday, May 25 due to an ORNL-observed holiday. The normal User Assistance Schedule will resume on Tuesday, May 26.

NOTE: The ORNL Computer Operations staff will remain available for limited troubleshooting 24 hours a day.

2021 INCITE Call for Proposals (Closes Jun 19)
The 2021 Innovative and Novel Computational Impact on Theory and Experiment (INCITE) Call for Proposals is now open and closes June 19.

The INCITE program promotes transformational advances in science and technology for compute and/or data-intensive large-scale research projects such as scientific modeling, simulation, and data analytics and artificial intelligence (AI) campaigns. INCITE projects are awarded large allocations of computer time and supporting resources at the Argonne and Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (LCF) centers, operated by the US Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science. INCITE seeks research challenges requiring capability computing from diverse areas: production simulations, compute intensive machine or deep learning applications, or large-scale data analysis that use a large fraction of the LCF systems and cannot be performed on less capable resources. INCITE supports high impact simulation, data and AI approaches which require the unique architectural infrastructure, high performance storage and networking capabilities available at the LCF centers.

Meetings & Workshops

No OLCF User Conference Call in May
The OLCF User Conference Call will not be held in May. The next call is scheduled for Wednesday, June 24. More information on that call will be provided in future weekly messages.

INCITE Proposal Writing Webinar (Jun 5)
To help you prepare your proposal for submission, the INCITE program is offering an instructional webinar on June 5. For more information or to register, visit https://www.olcf.ornl.gov/calendar/2021-incite-call-for-proposals-webinar-2/.

OLCF User Meeting (Jun 3-4)
Registration is now open for the 2020 OLCF User Meeting, which will be held June 3-4. This year’s meeting will be a remote-only event; attendance will be limited by the number seats available in the videoconference platform. Please register early to reserve your spot. For more information on the meeting or to register, please visit the event page.

ORNL Smoky Mountains Data Challenge
Registration for the ORNL Smoky Mountains Data Challenge is open until June 22. This analytics competition is calling for participation from experts and students to find insight in data from drawn from several active research efforts at ORNL. For more information or to register, visit the event page.

A kick-off webinar will be held May 20 at 1:00 PM EDT.
We will overview the 7 analytics challenges and how to register and download the datasets.
A Reddit AMA will be open for questions all day May 20 for anything we cannot answer during the Webinar.

GPU Hackathon Series
The following organizations, in conjunction with OLCF and NVIDIA, will be hosting GPU Hackathons as part of our annual GPU Hackathon Series. These hackathons are multi-day coding events in which teams of developers prepare their own application(s) to run on GPUs or focus on optimizing their application(s) that currently run on GPUs. Teams typically consist of three or more developers who are intimately familiar with (some part of) their application, and they work alongside two mentors with GPU programming expertise. These hackathons offer a unique opportunity for teams to set aside time for development, surround themselves with experts in the field, and push toward their development goals. During the event, teams will have access to compute resources provided by OLCF. If you’re interested in more information, or to apply, you can visit the site-specific event pages below. If you have questions, please contact Tom Papatheodore.

   – Deadline to apply: June 17, 2020

CUDA Training Series
NVIDIA will present a 9-part CUDA training series intended to help new and existing GPU programmers understand the main concepts of the CUDA platform and its programming model. Each part will include a 1-hour presentation and example exercises. The exercises are meant to reinforce the material from the presentation and can be completed during a 1-hour hands-on session following each lecture. The full list of topics can be found on the series page. If you have any questions about this series, please contact Tom Papatheodore. For more information on upcoming events in this series, or to register, see the links below:

  Managed Memory (Thursday, June 18)
  CUDA Concurrency (Tuesday, July 21)

OpenACC Training Series
NVIDIA will present a 3-part OpenACC training series intended to help new and existing GPU programmers learn to use the OpenACC API. Each part will include a 1-hour presentation and example exercises. The exercises are meant to reinforce the material from the presentation and can be completed during a 1-hour hands-on session following each lecture. The full list of events can be found on the series page. If you have any questions about this series, please contact Tom Papatheodore.
